Shirtworks reports that the campaign run by the Fairtrade Foundation urging consumers to swap to Fairtrade products has had a positive impact on the buying choices of its customers purchasing clothing for customisation

The major national campaign, which has captured the imagination of consumers and created a trending topic on Twitter, urged consumers to swap a regularly bought product for an equivalent produced from Fairtrade sources. "We've been following 'The Big Swap' Fairtrade Fortnight campaign run by the Fairtrade Foundation, and have been really impressed by the way the organisation is encouraging such massive change at a personal level," enthused Arron Harnden, MD of Shirtworks. "Offering Fairtrade clothing has been at the centre of our company's ethical framework for almost six years now, and to see the movement gaining traction on a national scale like this is simply fantastic. We've always given our customers the chance to choose a Fairtrade and/or organically produced piece of clothing for customisation," Arron explained, "and we sell those plain clothes for personalisation at cost price to encourage customers to make the ethical choice. It seems that the framework we've had in place for some time is benefitting from the increased profile that Fairtrade choices are being given by this campaign, and we're seeing that ethical choice being made more and more now."
Shirtworks was recently awarded Soil Association accreditation, a major component of the qualifying criteria being the proof that the company sources its products from a complete supply and production chain in which no child labour is involved at any point, demonstrating the company's commitment to ethical trading. "When we started to offer the Fairtrade range, we were very much in the minority, and often had to explain what it meant to our customers," commented Arron. "Now huge supermarket and high street store chains are announcing that they are either introducing or expanding their Fairtrade ranges, which suggests that the movement is truly mainstream now. We just have to take care not to feel smug when we see how ahead of the curve we are," Arron concluded.
